Hanging Out With Jerame Nelson, Miranda Nelson, Patricia King, Darren Stott, Shawn Bolz & Todd White

They say that when you hang out with people a lot, you become like them. While I don’t literally go down to get a burrito with Jerame Nelson or Starbucks with Todd White and I’ve never been on a plane with Miranda Nelson or in front of a dedication stone with Shawn Bolz, I do listen to their preaching and teaching.

Jerame Nelson is famous for preparing a sermon and throwing it out to follow the lead of Holy Spirit. Jerame and his wife, Miranda, have a ministry called Living At His Feet (LAHF). They are the leaders of The Fire & Glory Outpouring. In a way, I’m going to follow Jerame’s example with today’s post to Your Support Matters.
[ I changed this paragraph right before I went back to bed a little after 4 am today. If you guessed that I even changed the title of this post as I wrote it, you would be right. 🙂 ]

Today I was going to write about a couple things, but I heard Todd White when my wife was watching a video on Facebook. I really like this story quite a lot and I decided to change what this post would be about because I heard Todd speak.

You have over 200 videos to choose from with Jerame & Miranda Nelson at The Fire & Glory Outpouring. You could start with a hot August night like maybe, August 26th, 2016. You could watch the videos that bring you up to the the middle of October. (I assume it will take you a little while to catch up.) Along the way you’ll hear from Darren Stott, Patricia King and Shawn Bolz, as they were special guests at the most recent Fresh Awakening. Of course, you’ll see and hear Jerame & Miranda as those who attend or watch regularly do. Over 500,000 people have watched from 149 countries and 40-something states this year.

When October 12th rolls around you could watch LIVE and get prepared for The Fresh Awakening which starts October 13th and it will rock your world. Special guests Mahesh Chavda and Samuel Robinson will be there along with Miranda & Jerame Nelson. There might even be a special guest on the 12th. My wife and I and her sister and our nephews were at The Fresh Awakening last time and Darren Stott from Seattle Revival Center preached the night before.

This will be the third Fresh Awakening that I’ve attended. My wife and I live across the freeway from Summit Church in San Marcos, California where the revival (The Fire & Glory Outpouring & The Fresh Awakening) is being hosted. That’s providence for us right there. Check out The Fresh Awakening by clicking on this sentence.

Finally, I’ll leave you with a little Shawn Bolz who I think is amazing. You might hear that quite often when people describe all these people of God. The natural world might say that if everybody’s amazing then nobody is amazing. A philosophy professor might agree. A friend of mine named Myra says that “that’s not the way it works in God’s economy”. It’s really quite ok for all of them to be amazing. You may even find a favorite or two or three or four. Hopefully, you’ll hang out with these amazing people.

God loves you.

YOUR Support Matters

Have you ever looked at a few words and realized they could be understood in more than one way?

Personally, I like to let people know what they are in for.

When I created this blog one of the things I wanted you to know from the very start is that I’m creating a brand and I’m asking for your support when the time comes. A funny thing happened during our journey together. I realized how incredibly important it is that each one of us has support for our daily lives.

In other words, not only do I boldly ask for support FROM you through Your Support Matters (this blog), I want you to remember that support FOR you is incredibly important.

Where does the best support come from? Actually, there’s a better, more impactful way to ask that question.

Where does INDISPENSABLE support come from?

Just in case anyone is unclear, here is what Dictionary.com says:

indispensable
[in-di-spen-suh-buh l]

adjective
1.
absolutely necessary, essential, or requisite:
an indispensable member of the staff.
2.
incapable of being disregarded or neglected:
an indispensable obligation.

noun
3.
a person or thing that is indispensable.

Quite simply, indispensable support is support that we can’t do without.

Here are some verses from The Message bible version about that indispensable support and how to get it.

Psalm 121

A Pilgrim Song

121 1-2 I look up to the mountains;
does my strength come from mountains?
No, my strength comes from God,
who made heaven, and earth, and mountains.
3-4 He won’t let you stumble,
your Guardian God won’t fall asleep.
Not on your life! Israel’s
Guardian will never doze or sleep.
5-6 God’s your Guardian,
right at your side to protect you—
Shielding you from sunstroke,
sheltering you from moonstroke.
7-8 God guards you from every evil,
he guards your very life.
He guards you when you leave and when you return,
he guards you now, he guards you always.

Deuteronomy 31:6

6 “Be strong. Take courage. Don’t be intimidated. Don’t give them a second thought because God, your God, is striding ahead of you. He’s right there with you. He won’t let you down; he won’t leave you.”

John 15:4

4 “Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you. In the same way that a branch can’t bear grapes by itself but only by being joined to the vine, you can’t bear fruit unless you are joined with me.

Since your indispensable support comes from God it seems logical to me that each one of us needs to spend time with God deepening our relationship.

When I get together with a couple friends for our study I sometimes say our relationship with God is like riding with someone on a bus.

We might ride next to that person on the bus every day. We might even know that he’s part of a three-person family and he’s very pleased with his incredible son. We say hello sometimes and if something big happens in the world we might even ask how they’re doing with what’d going on. And maybe we’ve told him a little about our life.

In order to really know God and have stronger faith in his support for us we have to go deeper than that.

This is NOT about making anyone feel guilty.

It’s simply the way we are built as humans.

In my next post I’ll share more about going deeper in our relationship with God.

This video is Crowder singing about God’s love for you and me.

Don’t Miss Out On New Wonders Because Of Nostalgia

If you’re like me you see life differently than you did when you were younger. My wife and I have told tales of a time before video games, cable TV, home computers and ATMs(!) (to say nothing of the internet and video streaming) to our son and his friends. I still remember a buddy and I being dropped off in Solana Beach to see The Who’s Rock Opera, Tommy, in a double feature with a Monty Python film on a Saturday afternoon in 1974 or 1975 for 75 cents!

For me it’s absolutely amazing that someone in 2051 may look back with nostalgia on Amazon’s Echo like we do with the 8-track tape. (You can Google Amazon Echo if you’re unsure what I’m talking about. We love ours.)

When I started this blog I mentioned faith-based music from decades ago that I still enjoy. It’s true. I really do like Michael, Row The Boat Ashore. In searching Youtube I even found a version by Johnny Rivers from his album “Johnny Rivers Rocks The Folk”!

If we are convinced that everything was better back then we miss the great stuff of today. I’ve had discussions with people over the years about music, including music used in worship. Lots of people have convinced themselves that the “older stuff” was better.

We may have a special place in our heart because of the memories that are wrapped up with the “older stuff”. I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with that, BUT, and this is a big “but”, we need to live in the present if we’re NOT going to miss out.

From a faith perspective we can miss what God is doing now. He’s inviting us to join him. To hear God’s call to us today we need to be present with him IN THE PRESENT. Listening. One way to start listening is through music. If I were stuck in the “old stuff” I would have missed out on Crowder and his music.

When I’m in a worship service I’m not always in the mood to learn a new song, but I ask God to stretch me so I discover more about new ways to worship him. Because I didn’t close my mind to new music I heard “Come As You Are” and I found it impactful enough to check it out on Youtube. I heartily suggest you do the same. Check out the video below some of the lyrics I cribbed from Google.

Come out of sadness from wherever you’ve been
Come broken-hearted, let rescue begin
Come find your mercy, oh, sinner come kneel
Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal

So lay down your burdens, lay down your shame
All who are broken, lift up your face
Oh, wanderer come home, you’re not too far
So lay down your hurt, lay down your heart

Come as you are

And Twice On Sunday!

My habits have been changing recently.

If you had told me in January that within months I would be attending our wonderfully welcoming Solana Beach Presbyterian Church (SBPC) in addition to worship services at another site on a regular basis, I wouldn’t have believed you.

If you told me that those other services were sometimes over 3 1/2 hours long I might have laughed and said, “Riiiight.”

If you had prophesied it, well, I would have thought you were a little crazy.

Counting the added bonus of the near-monthly Fresh Awakening, I’ve attended the Fire & Glory Outpouring 22(!) times by my count and most of that in August and September.

Last week I attended our 70th anniversary celebration at SBPC and sat in our mini-park under a tree planted in faith several decades ago. Our gifted and bilingual senior pastor, Mike McClenahan, preached and led us in many exclamations of “Praise the Lord!”

I truly wish we could have services like that on a semi-regular basis. (Semi-regular so people won’t become so used to worship outdoors that they see it as “old hat”.)

During fellowship I got to recount my recent faith journey with several people including our hispanic pastor, Juan Daniel Espitia. I believe people are noticing that something IS going on with me and that that something is due to Holy Spirit.

After some afternoon rest Marianne and I, along with some family members(!), worshiped at Summit Church with Miranda Nelson preaching and for me it was the most visibly powerful move of the Holy Spirit that I can recall.

Having family worship with us is an added bonus I’ll share about in a future post.

Watch the 70th(!) anniversary video or audio from SBPC in the first link below.

Watch Jerame Nelson introduce his wife, Miranda, and get some flavor of her preaching as well as the aforementioned move of the Holy Spirit by starting at 1:53:45. Watch until around 2:20:00 to see a whole segment. Or continue watching to the end of the service or start at the very beginning of worship and watch to 3:46:49. Your choice!

I urge you to watch worship services from SBPC, The Fire & Glory Outpouring, and Summit Church online and come participate in person!

God Bless You!
