What Music Moves YOU!?

Years ago when I first really became a follower of Jesus I was sure I could make it easier by listening to “Christian” music.  That strategy didn’t last, though some songs have had a lasting impact.

What I’ve come to realize over the decades and especially recently is that what you (really, really!) want are songs that you find encouraging to your faith that you enjoy.  If the songs that your church plays in worship aren’t your favorite I strongly urge you to find the ones that are.  (Psst…it’s really ok if the same songs you hear in a worship service or mass aren’t your favorites – no matter what others may tell you.  There’s this thing that’s really real and it’s called grace.  That covers it.)

Because I desire more intimacy with God (whom I will refer to as the Holy Spirit for the rest of this post) I want to engage in behaviors that help me do that.  Music is one of the things that helps me become more intimate with the Holy Spirit.

In order to not get tired of this practice I want to “keep it fresh” by using music that I truly enjoy.  What I enjoy and what you enjoy may not be the same thing.

Also, some of your favorites may change as you find or remember other songs.

I’m sharing eight songs with you that I find helpful in directing my thoughts toward the Holy Spirit and what I’ve read in the bible.  I hope you find at least one that you enjoy, but there’s no requirement.  Maybe you’d prefer something like the Doobie Brothers’ “Jesus Is Just Alright With Me” or U2’s “40”.  That’s ok.  If you’re wondering about either one, check out Youtube.

Here’s my current list in no particular order:

1) Michael Row The Boat Ashore
2) In Moments Like These
3) Day By Day
4) The King of Glory
5) A Church Not Made With Hands – The Waterboys
6) Spirit In The Sky – Norman Greenbaum
7) El Shaddai – Amy Grant
8) You Are My Hiding Place
More about these songs in my next post.  There’s one for you to enjoy below.
Be filled with wonder!
Charlie

  1. Excellent article, Charles, and I couldn’t agree with you more! Keep writing, keep sharing…you’ve got a message worth shouting from the rooftops…and in Internet land! And you have a gift for writing! I like your song choices, too. Some of my faves. And “Day By Day”?! What a throwback that’s just as relevant as when it was written in the Bible (paraphrased a bit😊) and when we were kids! You put my mind and heart on the Holy Spirit…which lifted my spirits today💙 Thank you!

    1. Debi! I feel very encouraged by your comments and enthusiasm. I find it very freeing to choose my own music. I just remembered another one – All Day Song. Know it? Thanks for being a cousin who’s more like a sister!
